Education System in Tonga - An Overview
The Kingdom of Tonga publicly called Tonga is an independent archipelago in the southern Pacific Ocean. Tonga is situated east of Fiji, south of Samoa and about a third between Hawaii and New Zealand.
Primary education in Tonga is compulsory. Mission schools follows the curriculum prescribed by the government and provides education to about 8% of all primary school pupils and to 89% of students at post-primary level. Government primary schools provide free education, however high schools ask for tuition fees and the mission schools charge a nominal fee. In 1999, the pupil-teacher ratio at the primary level was 21 to 1.
In addition to this, students re taught English language at primary level and few selected Tongan students prepare for the New Zealand school certificate examination.
